Is Ranch Dressing Keto Friendly?

is ranch keto friendly? The most popular salad dressing in many areas of the world is ranch dressing. In fact, it is the number one choice in the United States. 

However, whether is or not it is keto friendly is a good question. One would think that that the answer would always be yes, but that isn’t the case. The answer is that it depends very much on the brand and the ingredients.

 

Hidden Valley Ranch:

When it comes to ranch dressing, a lot of people consider Hidden Valley Ranch to be the superior salad dressing. 

It can be bought dry and mixed at home, in a bottle for family use and there are even individual serving tubs available in some grocery stores. It’s also not keto friendly.

There are several reasons for this. The first is the carb and sugar count. Yes, it is only two grams of carbs and one gram of sugar, but that adds up… and it’s per serving.

Second, while it is high in fat, Hidden Valley Ranch uses soybean oil. That is one of the least healthy oils on the market. It is hot processed, which requires hexane. 

Not only does that harm the body, it is dangerous to work with. A couple of decades ago an entire street in Mexico was blown up due to a hexane explosion in the underground pipes.

Soy products also contain plant based estrogen like compounds. These compounds can trigger cancer of the reproductive systems in both men and women. 

If cancer has already occurred, it can cause it to go out of remission. It’s best to avoid as many soy products as possible in order to stay healthy.

There are other unhealthy things found in this salad dressing. MSG is used to help enhance flavor and to preserve it. 

However, it isn’t good for us and those with asthma may have a particularly hard time with it. There are other preservatives and chemicals in it, and these can also harm our bodies.

 

Is ranch dressing high in carbs:

Not all ranch dressings are made in the same way. There are several dressings that are keto friendly. 

Primal Ranch Dressing is made with avocado oil; a much healthier alternative to soybean oil. Other dressings made with this oil are also likely to be keto friendly.

Another oil choice is medium chain triglycerides like those found in coconut oil. This is often used for keto friendly products as well as for people who have malabsorption problems. A good example of this is Fat and Happy Ranch. 

Ranch dressing isn’t that difficult to make at home, either. It is a mixture of mayo, sour cream, lemon juice and herbs. 

Proportions can be found online or in the resources below, and don’t worry if you have problems with almond milk. Any other keto friendly product like it will work well.


Is McDonald’s ranch dressing keto?

No, it’s not. McDonald’s uses Newman’s Own Ranch Dressing. It’s a popular brand, but like Hidden Valley Ranch, it has more carbs than is keto friendly.


What salad dressings are keto?

The dressings mentioned above are all keto friendly. They use a minimum of chemical additives and appropriate, healthy oils. 

There are likely to be many more than those listed, but there is a way to find out if it is… and you don’t necessarily need the internet.

The two most important things you can do in selecting a keto friendly ranch dressing are to read the nutrition label and the ingredients list. 

You have to read both; the fat content of ranch dressings that aren’t keto friendly look good, so you have to check what kind of fat is being used.

You should always check the sugar, and not just the sugar content itself. What do they use to sweeten it? Do they use high fructose corn syrup? What about dextrose? Added sugars are not keto friendly. 

Check the sodium content. Some salt is needed, but if the dressing is loaded with it you should probably consider making it at home. That way, you control the sodium content.


What kind of chemicals are in it?

If you can’t pronounce it, it probably isn’t good for you. Even if you can, there are chemicals to be avoided. They’re great for shelf stabilization but not so great for human preservation.

Lastly, read carefully all of the types of fat in the product. If it says hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oil, put it back. Go for pure oils. 

They are usually cold pressed, which doesn’t involve hexane and therefore are safer both for the environment and for your health.

There are important steps that need to be taken before embarking on any new diet plan. The first is to see your doctor. 

You can discuss with him or her how much weight you need to lose, how quickly you need to lose it and how to stay healthy while on the diet. The doctor will test for medical conditions that may limit which diets you may be able to use.

The keto diet is not for everyone. Due to the high fat content, people with heart disease or who are at risk for heart disease may not be able to follow it. 

Dietary fat leads to plaque buildup in the arteries and could result in worsening of the disease. Those with diabetes may also have a hard time with it and will likely be advised not to use it.
